Cherry Blossoms by Night
Apr 6th
Considered by most Japanese to be the official start of the new year, April is not only a season of the famous ’sakura’ but also of fresh beginnings.
The weather seems to be turning quickly since the last evening snow we had almost six weeks ago. Although the days are quite warm, the evenings are still too cold to enjoy being outside for too long. While I’m looking forward to the warm weather, I must admit that I’m still quite dreading the hot and humid summer ahead. No choice though…
Although it was quite unplanned, Mari-chan and I decided to quickly put together a picnic dinner and have (what we thought would be) a nice quiet evening under the cherry blossoms. Although it was a good time, even in such a small town, the number of drunk Japanese was incredible. I still have yet to put my finger on why it is that the Japanese love getting drunk under the cherry trees. I’m sure I’ll figure it out some day.
PS- Pizza and dango go very well together.
Weekend Plans
Apr 13th
Our last day of practice teaching is over and we’ve only one more half-day of official training before this first round is over and the two days of kids training begins. Unfortunately, training aside, little else interesting has happened this past week. We begin each morning at 10:00 and end around 9:00, with an hour for lunch. With lesson preparation and vast amounts of reading to do, this week has been almost entirely consumed by work.
After we finish up for the day on Saturday however, we’re all going out for dinner, drinks and some karaoke. Something to look forward to…
Also, this Sunday I hope to make it down to some very famous gardens called “Korakuen” which we visited last weekend. I regrettably left my camera at the training center that day and missed out on quite a few nice photos. Apparently, this garden is one of the three most beautiful gardens in all of Japan, although I have no idea where the other two are located.
Until then, one more day of training, a night of drunken debauchery and a trip to one of the top three gardens in all of Japan…
