The Rest of the Two Weeks
Jan 6th
What a great trip back home. Although the trip to and from New York was painful, it was really nice to be able to spend the time at home, enjoy freedom from responsibility and see old friends. I was hoping to be able to post every few days, but as I expected, the overwhelming laziness of being on vacation took over and I only managed to churn out one over the span of two weeks. I’m fairly certain that I met up with the only two people who read this.
The weeks leading up to the trip back to East Hampton were incredibly busy so I didn’t have much of a chance to get excited about going home for the first time in two years. The bus, ferry, bus, plane, bus and plane ride was my chance to really let it sink in. While putting together the itinerary was a challenge, it was a bit of a rush traveling so far with on-the-spot planning.
After that one post covering the first two days, I went to a party with half a dozen high school friends, met up with Laurel and went ice skating, ate some Mexican with Allison, went to the city and spent time with Laura and Allison again, and filled the in-between time with my family. And that’s pretty much it.
I love Japan a lot, but being home really made me realize how much I also love New York. I remember chatting with a former co-worker about this same topic many months ago and what she she said really stuck with me. She had spent many years living abroad and had to return to Japan for family business. After that brief trip home, she realized that it was time to go back and later that year, she was back in Japan living in her hometown. Although I didn’t want to believe it at the time, I had a feeling that given a few months or years, I would probably feel the same way. Seems like things have reached an equilibrium between wanting to stay here and wanting to settle back in New York.
I really did miss the pizza in New York too.
I put up a bunch of pictures from the trip back. Most of them aren’t terribly interesting, but there are a few nice shots of a very snowy East Hampton and a few of the newly opened park in Manhattan called the High Line. Although I came back with 110 photos in total, I wish I had taken more. I ate some pretty fantastic food and met some pretty cool people which/who I would have liked to have taken a snapshot of to remember it/them by. Is that sentence correct?
Catching Up
Aug 20th
I’ve just uploaded some photos from the first few weeks spent here in Imabari. I’m just one album shy of being entirely caught up.
Imabari is a really nice place. I’m enjoying living here quite a bit. I’m a bit surprised at how much I miss Tokushima however. Several of my friends had been feeding me periodical updates of the ‘Awa-dance’ festival happening last week. While it was nice to see the photos and hear the news, I really wished I could have gone back for at least a quick visit. I might be able to make it back for a few days in September though.
As far as updates in my life, there have been a few. Nothing I can really post online, but I can imagine that they’re not terribly interesting anyway. Anything interesting happening in anyone else’s life? I always love to hear from you all! Post a comment or send me an email.
Old Friends
Aug 16th
After a quick late-night romp through facebook (the firs time in a very long time), I found a few friends from high school and earlier who I haven’t been in touch with. I realized that in a few cases, it’s been almost a decade since the last time I saw them, and perhaps even longer since the last time we had any sort of meaningful conversation. Just barely pushing the ripe old age of 24 and I already feel as though I’m getting old. I should be more careful about holding on to the friends I have.
Sorry the picture doesn’t correspond, in any way, to this short introspective rant. I couldn’t find anything better. Keep in touch everyone!
